Laura Mulva - Sing to the Moon
- This British soul singer-songwriter released her debut album with RCA in March 2013. Already receiving praise from The Guardian, BBC and the BRIT Awards, Mvula’s sound combines elements of gospel, pop and jazz. Betty Clarke of The Gaurdian called Mvula “Amy Winehouse singing Jens Lenkman,” but better. Her offbeat gospel claps on “Green Garden” complement her calm and confident vocals, creating a classed-up sing-along pop. The album covers a vast emotional landscape with intention, seduction and technical expertise. Listen to “That’s Alright” while you put on your face, “Green Garden” when the sun is shining and “Can’t Live With the World” when you want someone to sing you to sleep. Also: fun music videos! - Anna Faber
My Bloody Valentine - "MBV"
- The sudden presence of this record startled me. Of course, news of My Bloody Valentine’s regrouping had intermittently made it to my computer screen. But the release of MBV blew my socks off. I never saw it coming.
Strangely enough, that’s how I’d characterize this record. You never hear it coming. Like 1991’s Loveless, every cut emerges out of thin air, like ethereal traces weighed down by chugging, tidal guitars. Kevin Shields’’ vocals swoop in and out of the soundscape. The rhythm section is hardly even there, yet eerily perceptible. It’s as if nothing has changed.
So, after twenty-two years, My Bloody Valentine has proven its absence to be more hiatus than coma. My favorite track, New You is exemplary of MBV’s rather anonymous return. It doesn’t sound like anything on Loveless (or Isn’t Anything, for that matter) but retains every characteristic you’d expect to hear on a My Bloody Valentine cut. MBV is back, sure. But did you ever care if they were gone, or back or current or old or here or there or somewhere? Listening to a My Bloody Valentine album is sort of like stopping time. Go find this record and—for a little while—forget what year it is. - Evan Anderson
